Cancel Spotify Premium on Android and Stop the Charges

There is no button inside the Android app that will cancel Spotify Premium on Android outright, and the reason is that Spotify is often not the party taking your money.

Work out who charges you first. Everything after that is two taps. Skip that step and you get the outcome that fills support forums: the subscription looks cancelled in one place and the debit keeps arriving from another.

Find out who bills you before you cancel Spotify Premium on Android

Open your account page in a browser and look at the payment section. It names the collector. There are four answers and each one sends you somewhere different.

Spotify takes the money directly. Go to Manage your plan on the account page and choose Cancel subscription. Spotify also accepts a cancellation form as a fallback route if the page will not cooperate.

Google Play takes the money. You subscribed through the Play Store, so Google owns the billing. In the Play Store app, tap your profile image, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Select Spotify and cancel there. Nothing you do on Spotify’s own site will stop this charge.

Apple takes the money. This happens more often than Android users expect, usually because the subscription started on an iPad or an old iPhone signed in to the same Spotify account. It stops under Settings, your Apple ID, Subscriptions, on an Apple device. If you no longer own one, an Apple ID signed in through a browser can reach the same list.

A phone or broadband provider takes the money. Bundled plans cannot be cancelled through Spotify at all. Spotify’s own guidance sends you to the provider, and the contact link sits on your account page under payment settings.

The account page is the arbiter in every one of these cases. It is a plain text field, it is not hidden behind a menu, and reading it takes less time than the average forum thread about being charged twice.

What the cancellation does and does not end

Cancelling stops the renewal. It does not refund the period you already paid for, and it does not close your account.

Question Answer
When does Premium stop At the next billing date, not on the day you cancel
Trial cancelled early Account switches to free immediately
Playlists and saved music Kept
Downloaded tracks Removed, because offline listening is a paid function
Account itself Stays open on the free tier
Listening history Kept

The downloads clause is the one I would flag hardest. Spotify’s cancel page is generous about playlists and silent about the offline copies, and people read that silence as reassurance. It is not. When the plan lapses those files stop playing, and if you are heading somewhere without signal, cancel after the trip rather than before it.

What refunds you can expect

Close to none, and Spotify says so in an unusually direct way: cancel any time and keep what you paid for. The paid month is the refund. There is no partial credit for the weeks you did not use.

Two edges to that rule. Payments collected by a partner are outside Spotify’s reach entirely, and Spotify’s own policy points you at the collecting company for those requests, which puts you under Google’s or Apple’s refund rules rather than Spotify’s. Gift cards bought in a shop are also not refundable by Spotify, and the retailer is the only route back.

Audiobook purchases sit under a separate policy with a short unused-content window, so a cancellation and an audiobook refund are two different conversations even though both concern the same account.

What Spotify Free is like when you land on it

Worth knowing in advance, because the answer changed recently and older comparisons are wrong.

Free accounts on mobile no longer face pure shuffle. Spotify opened on-demand playback to free listeners in 2025 under a capped daily allowance; when the allowance runs out, playback falls back to shuffle with a small hourly skip quota until it refills. Ads return between tracks, audio quality drops, and downloads are gone apart from podcasts.

For a lot of people that is a workable tier rather than a punishment, which is the honest thing to say and not what a page trying to keep you subscribed would tell you.

When you are a member rather than the plan manager

On Duo and Family, running the cancel steps as a member does something narrower than you would expect. Spotify says it “will remove your account from the plan, but won’t cancel it”, which means your listening changes and the manager’s bill does not. Only the manager can end the plan.

If you are the manager and you cancel, everyone attached loses Premium on the same date. Nobody is notified individually. Tell them yourself unless you enjoy being asked why the music stopped.

If money keeps leaving after you cancel

Check the payment section again. Two subscriptions on two billing channels is a common state for anyone who has switched phones between platforms, and the account page shows only the one currently attached to that account. A charge from Google or Apple that outlives a Spotify-side cancellation is almost always a second subscription on a second account rather than a billing fault, and it has to be stopped in the store that created it.

The tell is the email address. Search your inbox for the receipt, and the address the receipt was sent to is the account still paying.
