Change the Coinbase Currency Display Without a Conversion

verified_against vendor-docs (the maker's own help pages, and nothing else) · verified_on · what these mean

Changing the Coinbase currency you see on screen and converting a balance into that currency are two different actions, and only one of them touches your money. The first is a display preference. The second is a trade with a price attached. People arrive at this question meaning the first and sometimes end up doing the second.

Two settings, two products

What you want Where it lives What it changes
The currency prices and balances are shown in, on coinbase.com Settings, then Preferences The unit on the screen
The same, in the Coinbase Wallet app Settings, then Display, then Local currency The unit on the screen
Holding a different currency The trade or convert flow Your actual balances

The first row and the second row are separate products with separate settings. Coinbase Wallet is the self-custody app; the coinbase.com account is the exchange side. Setting a display currency in one does nothing to the other, which is the single most common reason someone changes it and finds the old currency still showing somewhere.

What the Coinbase currency setting does not do

It does not convert anything. It does not move anything. It does not lock in a rate. What you hold before and after the change is identical, down to the last decimal, and only the label in front of the number is different.

That distinction matters because the second action has a cost and the first does not. Coinbase’s own pricing disclosures state that a spread is included in the quoted price for its simple buy and sell orders, and that you can see the spread in the order preview. Coinbase also commits to showing every fee immediately before you confirm a transaction and again in the receipt afterwards. If you are being shown a preview with a price on it, you have left the display setting and entered a transaction.

Where the documentation stops

I went looking through the Coinbase Help Center for an article on the display currency setting and did not find one. There are help pages for payment methods, for privacy settings, for the address book, and for pricing and fees. The currency preference lives in the product and is absent from the documentation.

Two consequences follow, and both are practical:

  • Label positions and wording can change without a help page changing with them, so trust what you see in Settings over any written path, including this one.
  • The dropdown itself is the authoritative list of which currencies are available to you. That list depends on your region, and no third-party guide can tell you what is in yours.

Old guides to this topic describe a menu icon of three horizontal lines, a Settings entry and a field called Native currency. The name of that field is the giveaway that a guide has aged; the current interface uses local currency wording. The concept survived. The label did not.

Before you change it

Two checks, both quick.

Confirm which Coinbase product you are in. The exchange account and the Wallet app look similar in screenshots and hold different things, and a setting changed in one will not appear in the other.

Then confirm what you are reading. A display currency is a conversion at whatever rate Coinbase is showing at that moment for information, not an amount you can withdraw in that currency without a further step. Withdrawing in a given currency depends on your region, your verification status and the payment methods your account supports, and none of that is governed by the display setting.
