Change the Gmail Profile Picture on Android in Two Routes

Changing the Gmail profile picture on Android takes three taps from inside the app: open Gmail, tap Profile at the top right, tap Change profile picture on the image itself. Google documents that route and a second one, and the difference between them is worth knowing before you pick.

The in-app route to the Gmail profile picture on Android

Fastest, and it stays inside Gmail:

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap Profile at the top right.
  3. Tap Change profile picture on your picture.

The account route

Google’s own page leads with this one, and it lands you somewhere with more options:

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com/personal-info on your phone.
  2. Tap Profile picture.
  3. Choose a source: Browse illustrations, Upload from Device, Take a picture, or Google Photos.
  4. Rotate and crop if you want to.
  5. Tap Next, then Save as profile picture.

Browse illustrations is the entry the older guides cannot know about, and it solves a real problem: if you want a face on your account without putting your face on your account, Google now supplies drawings. There is also a Past profile pictures list, reached from More at the top right, which is the only way back to an image you replaced and no longer have a copy of.

Of the two, I would bookmark the account route. The in-app tap is a shortcut into the same machinery and it drops you straight at the upload, which is the wrong place to be standing if you have not decided yet, and it is not where the Past profile pictures list lives.

What you are changing is bigger than Gmail

Google states it in one sentence: your Gmail profile picture is the same as your Google Account picture and can appear in other Google services. Whatever you upload here is what people see next to your comments, your shared documents, your calendar invitations and your reviews.

Old tutorials for this task route you through a menu item called My Account inside the Gmail settings. That entry is gone, which is why those guides dead-end on the settings screen. The setting did not move to a new place inside Gmail. It moved out of Gmail into the Google Account, where it always logically belonged.

There is no per-product picture. If you want a different face for one Google service than for another, the answer is that you cannot have one.

The delay, and what shows up meanwhile

Google warns that a changed picture can take some time to update across all Google products. Expect the new image in Gmail almost at once and in other places later, which is normal rather than a failed upload. Give it a day before you try again.

If you have no photo at all, Google shows your initials in its place. That is the fallback the account falls back to, so removing a picture does not leave a blank space.

One practical limit while you are in there. The crop tool offers rotation and framing and nothing else, so anything that needs adjusting beyond that has to be fixed before you upload it.
