Three separate conditions decide whether you can download videos from Twitter on Android inside the app itself, and X publishes every one of them. Miss any single condition and the button is absent, which is why so many people conclude the feature does not exist.
The wording X uses is that Premium subscribers can download videos “from certain posts.” Certain, not all. A missing Download video option is ordinary behaviour rather than a fault in your app.
What has to be true to download videos from Twitter on Android
You pay for Premium. The download control is documented as a Premium subscriber feature. On a free account it is not there at all, on any post.
The post is from 25 July 2023 or later. X states the cutoff without softening it: “Videos posted before the 25th of July 2023 are not downloadable.” Nothing you subscribe to reaches back past that date. Of the three gates this is the one that silently disqualifies the most posts, and it is the one the download guides never mention.
The poster left downloads on. Since that same July date, uploads default to downloadable, and the person posting can switch off Allow video to be downloaded while composing. Accounts belonging to under-18s have the setting forced off with no way to change it.
Once all three hold, the route is short: open the video, tap the three dot icon at its top right, tap Download video.
Why your Download video button is missing
Work down the gates in order. No Premium, no button anywhere. Premium but the post predates the cutoff, no button on that post and no route around it. Premium and a recent post but still nothing, and you are looking at a poster who turned the switch off.
That last decision is permanent in both directions. X spells it out for the person uploading: “this setting cannot be changed later; to disable downloads in the future, you would need to delete the post itself.” They cannot grant you access after the fact and you cannot request it.
Protected accounts sit outside all of this in a way worth knowing. X warns posters that followers may download or re-share links to videos in protected posts, and that “links to videos shared on X are not protected.”
The site every old guide points at is broken
Guides from the 2010s, including the version of this page that stood here before, sent readers to DownloadTwitterVideo.com. I checked it on 3 September 2026.
The certificate it serves expired on 10 April 2026, so a current browser stops you with a full-page security warning before any page loads. Port 80 answers with a permanent redirect to byclickdownloader.com, and pushing past the warning on the secure address lands on the same destination: a paid desktop grabber whose page title advertises a YouTube downloader. The old server banner is still on the response. Whatever that domain was in 2017, it is not a Twitter video tool now.
The third-party downloaders that replaced it work by taking a copied post link. X does not document any of them and does not endorse them, and its display requirements govern what you may do with a post once you have it: real, unmodified content, with the author’s name and username attached. Downloading is the easy half. Reusing someone else’s video without that attribution is where the trouble sits.
Videos in direct messages follow a separate rule
The DM path has its own version numbers. From version 10.24 of the Android and iOS apps, a video you send in a direct message is downloadable unless the sender disables Allow video to be downloaded while sending it. Videos sent from older builds are not downloadable at all. To save one, long press the video and tap Download video.
As with posts, the sender’s choice locks the moment the message goes out.
